Last year we began a series of upgrades to our hiking gear. The decision of the right pack for a day or two on the trail was critical to our comfort and most basic needs. The folks at New England Backpacker were really great as we slogged through the packs to find what would work best for us.
I finally decided on the Deuter Futura 30 SL.
I've been putting the pack through its paces and am very happy with my purchase. This pack is designed for women and contains more padding through the hips. It is comfortable. At 5' even, size matters for my torso length; the adjustments could be improved a bit by offering a wider range (it could be just a tad smaller for me). It vents well and even on very hot days the back remains dry. The straps get wet, but that is something I can live with.
The fit and finish are very good. The zippers are durable and the straps slide easily. I would like to have the ability to compress the bottom of the pack when I am not using it for an overnight trip, but it does not present a detriment to not have the compression.
The built-in pack cover is easy to access. The cover has kept my gear dry through many heavy storms.
- Multiple compartments
- Rain cover is included
- Great venting
- Built in pack cover is easy to access
- Could benefit from a wider range of adjustments (smaller)
- No compression straps for bottom compartment
