County Rd (Stamford, VT) south to Massachusetts/Vermont state border.
Trip length: 6.2 miles
Departure time: 9:30 am
Return time: 2:30 pm
We parked at a small parking area along County Rd, which is an maintained dirt road. The sign for the Seth Warner shelter is 0.3 miles south of County Rd (the shelter itself is 0.2 miles west down the spur). We continued on at quite a slow pace -- stopping for who knows what -- until we finally established a good pace.
The weather was about 20 degrees cooler than was forecasted, showing just over 50 degrees on our thermometer. Just in case that wasn't enough of a twist, Good Ol' Mother Nature decided to throw some rain in, too. Light precipitation one mile into our hike became progressively heavier on our return from the MA/VT border.
We stopped at the Seth Warner shelter both to check it out, and for a reprieve from the rain on our return. Apparently the through-hikers did better evaluation of weather conditions than we did; the only other hikers we saw were out for the weekend.
All in all it was a good day and a great test of our gear during inclement conditions.
